Big D's Rib Shack BBQ

All I can say is WOW.  I was stopped at the intersection of Tennessee and Ocala when a bunch of smoke coming from a smoker set up next to a tent and a bright yellow truck in the Gas Mart parking lot caught my eye.  This totally unexpected stop turned into the redefining of the term one stop shopping for sure.

Big D's has been here for going on 2 weeks and I don't know how long he'll be here but you definitely don't want to miss him.  I had the Ribs & Chicken, with 2 sides (potato salad and baked beans).    The ribs are some serious home cooking, nicely smoked and moist and meaty.  My favorite -- the crispy edges and the small bits at the bottom of the plate -- were full of intense flavor.  They reminded of my Aunt Diane's delicious ribs except for one thing -- my Aunt Diane doesn't have the Big D's homemade BBQ sauce.  Its sweet honey taste is delicious, rich and light (taste wise -- not sure about calorie wise!).  The ribs were great and the chicken was good too.  I've never quite tasted chicken like this -- it has a nice coating of BBQ sauce and melts in your mouth.  There's enough extra BBQ sauce at the bottom to dip the meat in for the extra flavor.

The sides may look rather run of the mill -- but au contraire.  The potato salad's light yellow dressing has diced pieces of celery, onion and pimento that give a nice burst of flavor.  And the baked beans are little beans with a big flavor.  Though the baked beans have a honey sweetness to them as well, the subtleties of the recipe give them quite a different taste from the BBQ sauce.

Big D's doesn't sell drinks so you can pop in to the gas station for that.  And while you're at it fill up too. And you've now just accomplished some really productive one stop shopping.  And you'll probably be craving some more Big D's when the gas tank is getting low again, that's just my guess.

Mr. B's Real Grill Bar-B-Que (E Orange Ave b/t S Monroe St and S Meridian St)

After hearing about the great BBQ that can be found near Adams, I finally had the pleasure of getting to try some.  I was on my way down Orange headed to the Post Office, when food trucks started to appear and I knew right then that I had to finally stop and give it a try.  The one that caught my eye was set off the road right and shares a parking lot with a barber shop.  And though this might sound cliche -- it has changed my life -- or at least my life in Tallahassee.  My first food truck experience was amazing -- and it may very well be the best meal that I've had in Tallahassee.

Mr B's is the BEST!!  I got the white meat chicken dinner with baked beans and coleslaw.  I wasn't sure what to think when I opened the box and the BBQ chicken breast was slathered in BBQ sauce.  But the chicken was nice and warm and the BBQ sauce had a delicious flavor.  I am not yet a connoisseur of BBQ but I know what I like.  Once you taste the chicken, you will want to get into the bones and find ever last piece to dip into the BBQ sauce.  The sides looked small but they were certainly filling.  The coleslaw was light, the veggies were crisp and fresh.  The baked beans had a sweetness to them and were delicious.

The meal was perfectly filling and for about $8 -- worth every cent.  They have some outdoor seating which was a nice place to enjoy my meal.  The food is finger licking good, but be sure to bring your hand wipes!
